Windows 2000 Dial-Up Networking settings

1. To make sure that your Dialup Networking settings are correct in Windows2000, double-click on the My Computer icon and open the Control Panel folder.

   

2. Double-click on the Network and Dial-up Connection icon.

   

3. Right-click on your Netlabs.net connection, and select properties.

   

4. Make sure the Phone number matches your local dialup number, as determined by using the tool at http://www.netlabs.net/access.html. Click on the Options tab.

   

5. Make sure that the Display progress while connecting, Prompt for name and password, certificate, etc., and Prompt for phone number are all marked, and that Include Windows logon domain is unmarked. You should connect to Netlabs.net on your first dialup, so the number and frequency of redial attempts are purely optional. Click on the Security tab.

   

6. Under Security options, make certain that Typical is marked, and that you are allowing unsecured passwords. Under Interactive logon and scripting, you will not want either checkbox to be marked when making a normal, PPP connection to Netlabs.net. Click on the Networking tab.

   

7. Your connection to Netlabs.net is of type PPP: Windows 95/98/NT4/2000, Internet, and you will be using the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). If you do not have the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) installed, please do so. To make sure that your TCP/IP protocol is configured properly, highlight the and click on the Properties button.

   

8. In the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window, make sure that both Obtain an IP address automatically and Use the following DNS server addresses are marked. For the Preferred DNS server enter 216.116.128.3 and for the Alternate DNS Server enter 216.116.128.4. Click on the Advanced button below.

   

9. Make sure that you have both Use default gateway on remote network and Use IP header compression are checked. Click on the DNS tab.

   

10. Your DNS server addresses, in order of use should already show 216.116.128.3 and 216.116.128.4. You will also want to mark Append these DNS suffixes (in order) and add "netlabs.net" below. At the bottom of this window, you should have Register the connection's addresses in DNS marked, and Use this connection's DNS suffix in DNS registration unmarked. Click on the WINS tab.

    

11. If there is anything in the field labeled WINS addresses, in order of use, remove them. Enable LMHOSTS lookup should not be marked. Click on the Options tab.

    

12. Click on the Properties button.

    

    Make sure that Do not use IPSEC is marked. Click OK at the bottom of this window, and again at the next window, until you are back at the Networking window

    

13. Click on the Sharing tab

    

14. Make sure that Enable Internet Connection Sharing for this connection is unmarked for a normal PPP connection. Click OK.
