Plainfield FrisbeeDog Competition - 9/10/2000

Plf1 Sunday (September 10, 2000) was the fourth year I competed in the annual Plainfield, NJ Alpo FrisbeeDog event.  I was very sad to learn that the organizer of the event and a really wonderful lady, Ruth Dobson had passed away during the summer.  I believe Ruth was 86 years old.  The Plainfield event has traditionally been scheduled for the first Sunday in June.  In June Ruth had not yet received the supplies to hold the event and as a result postponed it until September.  We had not phoned prior to the event in June so we (as did a few others) drove to Plainfield on that Sunday in June.    Ruth bicycled to the field from her home to let everyone know that the event was not going to be held that day.  I learned when attending the event in September that Ruth bicycled everywhere.  She was a wonderful lady and I'm glad I had a chance to meet her.    If it were not for the fact that there was a Plainfield event which was less than an hour from my home I may never have gotten to that first event to enter and get "hooked" on competing.  Thanks to Ruth I have had a lot of fun at events over the past four years.

I wish I could say that in Ruth's honor, I went out and performed my best this year, but frankly we came up very short.  Between some bad throws, my lack of drive and a warm day, my score was not very impressive.  I guess we had better get in some practice before Saugerties in October!  That event will have some serious competitors.

Bear beat me again (he won in Bogota as well).  He has really come on strong this year.  Tess took second place.  She is a gorgeous 6 year old Lab who I met last year at the Regionals in Philadelphia.  I think part of my poor frisbee performance was because I was preoccupied with Tess........... not that my preoccupation was in any way reciprocated. :-(     Can she jump!

Following are the results:

Place Dog/Human Breed Round 1 Round 2 Total
1st Bear/Chris Aussie 12 11 23
2nd Tess/Dave Lab 13.5 8.5 22
3rd Maggi/Mark Aussie 8 10.5 18.5
4th Sady/Keith Border Collie 3.5 14.5 18
5th Rudy/Bob Lab 7.5 7.5 15
6th Jesse/Willie German Shepherd 6.5 1.0 7.5
7th Sassy/Willie German Shepherd 1.5 1 2.5

A special thanks to Paul Klimuc who had helped Ruth Dobson run this event for the past several years.  Paul assumed responsibility for the Plainfield event and promised to continue it again next year.  Paul indicated that he will try to find a better field with more facilities and will be promoting the event harder to get a larger turnout of both dogs and spectators.  I'll be doing everything in my power to assist Paul in making this event one of the finest Alpo events in the Northeast.  I'll certainly be back again next year!  Keep that 1st Sunday in June 2001 open!
