Leesport, PA FrisbeeDog Competition - 7/7/2001

Plf1 On Saturday (7/7/2001)  we traveled to Leesport, Pennsylvania for their annual Skyhoundz Canine Frisbee Competition at the Berks County 4H facilities.  It's a very pretty ride and the weather could not have been better.   The competition was fierce with entries from 4 states.  There were even  two teams who were Northeast Regional 2nd place finishers (Chris & Bear and Lena & Peter)!

We got there early so before the event started we tried a practice round.  Unlike our most recent events, Bob's throws were right on the mark and although we didn't time the round we felt we may have gotten in six throws.   All was looking good!

As happens all too often for me, we wound up being the first team to compete!  Since we had a practice round earlier Bob decided to forgo any practice throws and we got right into it.  Well his throw went long,  left and drifted out of bounds.  Naturally I caught it .....but after I did I noticed that Tess standing right there!  Tess is a petite and very pretty black Lab.  Well, I had wanted to go see her since I had spotted her earlier....and here I was with no leash and now she was only five yards away.  How could I resist? ........ I didn't!   I didn't hear anything or think anything other than of Tess.  That is, until Bob came running and grabbed me by my collar.  I picked up my frisbee and we ran back to the throwing line.  Bob threw the next one in bounds and then 2 long ones to try to make up for the lost time.  Luckily we got out of Round 1 with 14.5 points.  Not great, but enough to be respectable.    The second Round we did somewhat better.  See the complete results, below:

*The above scores, you may notice, are very high!  The primary reason is that the course layout was not the official length.  One of the contestants paced it off before the event and noted that it was about 10 yards too short from end to end. When it was mentioned to the folks running the event they acknowledged that was the case but they purposely shortened the course because of a small gully on one end (there was a driveway on the other).  It was an excellent decision in the interest of safety and they clearly had no other recourse.  It it was certainly fair to all competitors.

Oh!  I almost forgot to mention that the last place finisher was Captain Kirk.  The Captain is 13 years old and still competing!  He looks great and appeared to be having a wonderful time.  He was smiling and his tail wags when he plays frisbee.  Although his legs didn't allow him to catch any frisbees on this day, he clearly still has the frisbee "drive".  In his day, the Captain was a fierce competitor and I believe before my days at Leesport, he was an event winner.  If you're interested in seeing some past Leesport results......  Leesport 1999Leesport 1998.

Thanks to Maryann and Russ Bowman for running this very fine event.  I sure hope that they keep up the tradition and run it again next year.  I particularly enjoy this event as there are other Labs competing,  Rosie, Captain Kirk and Tess (Rosie, and Tess are foxes!).  ..........and I'm happy to say that the Labs took 1st and 3rd!
