Growth and development are sequential, thus, the area of physical education offers organized activities and sports. Physical education includes a movement toward more cooperative activities, with less emphasis on competition. The curriculum teaches individual skills and movement exploration with a greater emphasis on the well being of the "whole" human body. Included in our program are a tennis unit, dance unit, a movement exploration unit and health units which incorporate sports that foster growth and development at age-appropriate levels.
Organized sports are encouraged for our student-athletes. A variety of Sports Programs are: Girls' Basketball, Boys' Basketball, Girls' Cheerleading, Boys' Baseball, Girls' for Softball, and various Weekend Athletic Activities. The Physical Education and Sports experience of students at St. Joseph School support the development of Christian values by teaching that a champion is one who finishes the race, not matter how tough the struggle. The winning is not in beating others, but in reaching your goal. The goal is to do your best and to be the best possible you. Students are encouraged to respect and care for their bodies, to grow, and to develop their individual talents to the fullest to be used for the honoring of God. The skills of teamwork and sportsmanship help to create a sense of community and school spirit.
St. Joseph School's commitment to Good Sportsmanship is of the utmost importance. Our students understand and respect the right of their sports' opponent to win; that each team has the right to win. Sportsmanship has been defined as "honest rivalry, courteous relations, and graceful acceptance of results." The following suggestions serve as guides for students so they know what to do in order to demonstrate good sportsmanship.
Students Should:
1. Consider opponents and officials as guests.
2. Respect rights of students from other schools.
3. Respect rights of spectators.
4. Respect authority and judgement of coaches.
5. Respect school property and authority of school officials.
6. Become familiar with the rules of the game.
7. Cheer both teams as they come on court/field.
8. Comment and cheer good plays by both teams.
9. Support cheerleaders wholeheartedly.
10. Cheer an injured player who is removed from the game.
11. Show respect for the integrity and judgement calls of the officials.
12. Show self-control during and after games.
13. View an athletic event in perspective...as a game rather than a "do or die" effort.
14. Be modest in victory and gracious in defeat.
15. Encourage others to abide by the principles of good sportsmanship.
